Arduino vs ESP32
How the two compare, and how to choose between them.
This compares the classic Arduino Uno with a typical original ESP32 development board. Other boards in each family differ, so check the details of the one you buy.
| Feature | Arduino Uno | ESP32 board |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Not built in | Built in |
| Processor | 8-bit, single core | 32-bit, usually dual core |
| Speed and memory | Modest | Considerably more |
| Pin voltage | 5 volts | 3.3 volts |
| Programming | Arduino IDE, ready to go | Arduino IDE with an add-on, MicroPython and others |
| Beginner friendliness | Very simple and well documented | Friendly, with a few more things to learn |
How to choose
- Pick an Arduino Uno if you are brand new, want the simplest start, or are working with 5 volt parts.
- Pick an ESP32 if your project needs Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or needs more speed and memory.
- Both are inexpensive, so many people end up trying both.
